PECS, Hungary – Jasmine MIAN (CAN) won at 48kg and three teammates swept up the last three categories as Canada won four titles in the female events and took home the women’s team honors at the University Wrestling World Championships.

Newly minted world team member Mian edged Japanese Shiori ITO (JPN), 4-2, in the 48kg final to claim her first international triumph since defeating 2012 world champion Jessica MacDONALD (CAN) in the Canadian team trials in May.

Canada advanced four wrestlers to the finals on the second day of women’s matches at the University of Pecs sports hall and closed with three wins from Danielle LAPPAGE (CAN), two-time junior world champ Dorothy YEATS (CAN) and top-ranked Erica WIEBE (CAN).

Wiebe collected her fifth win of the year with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Epp MAE (EST) in a rematch of their 75kg final in the Austrian Ladies Open in June.

In other finals, world bronze medalist Emese BARKA (HUN) won one for the home team with a technical fall over Oksana NAGORNYKH (RUS) at 58kg.  The win was Barka’s second at 58kg after a triumph at the German Grand Prix in early June.

World University Games silver medalist Maria LYULKOVA (RUS) pinned Celeste CONTANT-RODRIGUES (CAN) in the 60kg final for her first international title since winning the 2012 European junior crown.

Former Youth Olympic Games silver medalist Iulia LEORDA (MDA) won her first gold medal ever in five years on the international circuit with a triumph at 53kg, while Chiho HAMADA (JPN), headed to the senior world championships in September, bagged Japan’s only gold medal of the tourney at 55kg.

In an unofficial tally, Canada finished with 66 points from four champions and one silver medalist and bronze medalist each for the team title.  Russia, with Lyulkova’s win at 60kg slipped past the United States for second place, 62-59.
