Greco-Roman Begins Alongside Big Female Throwers at World Championship

TASHKENT (September 12) – London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist and former world champion Roman VLASOV (RUS) helps kick off the Greco-Roman competition at the World Championship on Friday with a bid to regain to the crown he lost in last year’s final.
Alongside action at 75kg and 85kg in Greco-Roman at the Gymnastics Palace, some of the biggest throwers in female wrestling, including top-ranked Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT), will bring the curtain down on the women’s events with competition at 63kg.
European champion Grigorjeva will be joined by last year’s silver medalist SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Jackeline RENTERIA (COL) in a “group of death” battle at the bottom of the bracket for one lone berth in the semifinals.
Vlasov, meanwhile, will battle at 75kg with friend and London 2012 silver medalist Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) from opposite halves of the bracket, while a host of challengers, including last year’s world silver medalist Saman TAHMASEBI (AZE), will seek to become the new 85kg champion.

63kg (25 entries)
European champion Grigorjeva, who missed last year’s meet with some neck problems, comes to Tashkent top-ranked with wins at the Klippan Open and the European championships.
She has drawn, however, to the bottom quarter of the bracket along with second-ranked Renteria, No.3 Elena PRIROZHKOVA (USA) and No.7 Soronzonbold.
Grigorjeva squares off with Golden Grand Prix Final winner Pirozhkova and Soronzonbold meets unranked Rio WATARI (JPN), who was runner-up at the 2013 Yarygin Grand Prix – to Grigorjeva.
The survivor of this “group of death” could meet veteran Monika MICHALIK (POL) or world student champion Danielle LAPPAGE (CAN) in the semifinals.
The upper half of the bracket features European bronze medalist Yulia TKACH (UKR), who could meet junior world runner-up Dalma CANEVA (ITA) in the other semifinal.
Greco-Roman
75kg (39 entries)
London 2012 gold medalist Vlasov begins his quest to regain the world title in the middle of the bracket. He looks a potential match-up with 2013 Universiade silver medalist Hadi ALIZADEH POURNIA (IRI) in the quarterfinals and Golden Grand Prix Final bronze medalist Laszlo SZABO (HUN) in the semis.
World bronze medalist Julfalakyan, a regular fixture on the international medals podium, is only three places away from Vlasov, but must navigate the lower half of the bracket.
His first test will come in the round of 32 against European bronze medalist Elvin MURSALIYEV (AZE), who won the Golden Grand Prix Final at 80kg. Robert ROSENGREN (SWE) is a likely quarterfinals opponent.
Among the 14 wrestlers who have drawn to the bottom of the bracket, 2007 world champion Yavor YANAKIEV (BUL) and GGP Final runner-up Zurabi DATUNASHVILI (GEO) appear to be likely candidates for the semifinals.
85kg (36 entries)
Tahmasebi, the silver medalist at the GGP Final, begins at the top of the bracket with a possible showdown with 2013 European runner-up Vladimir GEGESHIDZE (GEO) or 2010 world champion Hristo MARINOV (BUL) in the quarterfinals.
In the middle of the bracket, European champion Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) begins where he left off in Vantaa, Finland – opposite European silver medalist Rami HIETANIEMI (FIN) in the round of 32.
Battling them for a quarterfinal berth will be Russian national champion Asamat BIKBAEV (RUS) or 2010 world runner-up Pablo SHOREY (CUB).
London 2012 bronze medalist Damian JANIKOWSKI (POL) and Melonin NOUMONVI (FRA) will battle for one semifinal berth in the lower half of the bracket.
Asian silver medalist Rustam ASSAKALOV (UZB) will have the fans on their feet as he tries to surpass 2013 world bronze medal winners Javid HAMZATOV (BLR) and Viktor LORINCZ (HUN) in the lower quarter of the bracket.
