Kazakhstan and Russia Victorious at President's Cup

ASTANA (July 26) -  For the first time in six years the 2015 Kazakhstan's President Cup welcomed wrestlers in Greco-Roman, freestyle and female wrestling. The first competition was 2010, but had not previously included Greco-Roman wrestling.

The tournament was sponsored by President of Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, who himself was is a wrestler as a youth, competing in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. Years after retiring and taking on his political role, the president remains a big fan of sport, continuously supporting the national sport.

Total prize monies for the tournament was $100,000 with eight teams entering the competition: Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia, Belarus, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and India. The tournament was used by some nations as a way to choose their teams for the World Championships in Las Vegas.

In freestyle wrestling Asian Champion of this year and World Junior champion Bekhbayar Erdenebat led his Mongolian team along with two-time world bronze medalist and Asian Games winner Mandakhnaran Ganzorig. India was led by world silver medalist and Asian champion Amit Kumar. Team Uzbekistan team was Asian champion Umidzhon Ismanov. Kazakhstan was paced by Asian champions Rasul Kaliev and Daulet Niyazbekov, Olympic bronze medalist Akzhurek Tanatarov and others. 

"It was a great tournament and good experience for our team. In this team we have a sportsmen which we hope will be an Olympic champion. Organisation of this tournament on the very high degree. We will be happy come to Astana again," said Indian female wrestling Kuldeep Sehraawat.
