Former UWW Vice President Oktay passes away

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (March 27) -- Former United World Wrestling Vice President Kemal OKTAY (TUR) died on Tuesday at the age of 80 years after a prolonged illness.

Oktay, who became the UWW Vice President in 1985, was born in Istanbul in 1944. He remained in that position till 1998 and contributed to benefit wrestling.

A sports enthusiast, Oktay took an interest in wrestling after his son Ali won medals in age-group competitions. Ali has won medals at the age-group European and World Championships.

A recent surgery plus his deteriorating health had kept Oktay away from wrestling.

United World Wrestling expresses its deepest condolences to the Oktay family.

Famed Germany coach Ostermann passes away

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (August 28) -- Heinz OSTERMANN, former head coach of Germany, passed away at the age of 85 in the night of August 26–27, 2025.

Ostermann dedicated more than 25 years of his life as national coach, leading German athletes to 9 Olympic medals, 32 World Championship medals and 60 European Championship medals. Beyond these outstanding achievements, he was known as a mentor and role model for generations of wrestlers.

The German Wrestling Federation will honor his memory with great respect and gratitude. Ostermann will be remembered internationally as one of the most influential German wrestling coaches of his time.
