Favorite(s): London 2012 gold medalist Hamid SORYAN (IRI) is back, seeking an eighth world-level title. Soryan, who won the 2014 world title, did not place in Las Vegas after being disqualified in a quarterfinal bout with Rovshan BAYRAMOV (AZE).

Soryan, who turns 31 only days after the Games, lost early in the first two Olympic qualifiers. At the “last chance” qualifier in Istanbul, Soryan bounced back for four technical falls in a total time of 4:10 for one of the last tickets to Rio 2016.

Rovshan BAYRAMOV (AZE), 29, won silver medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and seeks to become Azerbaijan’s second Olympic Games gold medalist in the classic style after Farid MANSUROV in Athens 2004. Bayramov also won the world title in 2011.

In Las Vegas, Bayramov got caught in bodylock early in the championship final with Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) for a takedown and three quick gut wrenches as the bout was stopped after only 32 seconds.

Challengers: Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) is the 2015 world champion, but at 24, has only had limited success in his young career. Like Bayramov, he apparently has not seen any major international competition since Las Vegas.

YUN Won-Chol (PRK) was world champion in 2013 and a bronze medal winner in Las Vegas, defeating Soryan, 6-5, in the consolation semifinals. Yun fell to Bayramov, 9-8, in the round of 16.

Almat KEBISPAYEV (KAZ), who finished in fifth place at London 2012, took bronze medals at the 2014 Asian Games and at the 2015 world championships. Kebispayev won the Golden Grand Prix Final in Baku by technical fall over regional rival Elmurat TASMURADOV (UZB).

Dark Horses: Stepan MARYANYAN (RUS) won the 2015 European Games but was bumped out of the world championships in the round of 16. Maryanyan defeated European champion Mingiyan SEMENOV (RUS), 4-2, at the Grand Prix of Spain in July.

Elmurat TASMURADOV (UZB) is a two-time world bronze medalist (2013, 2014) and was runner-up at the prestigious Poddubny tourney in January.  He slipped to 11th place in Las Vegas after a 6-6 loss to Ivo ANGELOV (BUL) in the round of 16.

Ninja Wrestler: Shinobu OTA (JPN) stunned Soryan, 7-4, in the opening bout of the Asian Olympic qualifier in Astana and later earned qualification for Rio 2016. Ota has been dubbed “Ninja wrestler” for his unpredictable style of wrestling – which led to 10-6 win over then-world champion Yun in the 2014 Asia championships.

Favorite: Roman VLASOV (RUS) is the reigning world and Olympic Games champion, but his road from London 2012 gold medalist to Rio 2016 has seen some detours.

Vlasov lost the world title he first claimed in 2011 to fellow London 2012 gold medalist KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR) in a duel for the 2013 crown. At the 2014 world meet, he was stunned by Andy BISEK (USA) in the round of 16, opening the door for rival Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) to win his first world title.

Vlasov reclaimed the world title in Las Vegas with wins over world champions Julfalakyan, and Peter BACSI (HUN) as well as Mark MADSEN (DEN), who received his fourth silver medal at the world championships. The 25-year-old Vlasov won six bouts by a combined score of 40-0.

Challengers: Asia champion Dozshan KARTIKOV (KAZ), 27, defeated two world champions, Kim and Julfalakyan, on his way to a bronze medal at the 2015 world meet. Kartikov’s lone loss was, 7-0, in the quarterfinals to Vlasov.

Mark MADSEN (DEN), 31, fifth place at London 2012, defeated Andrew BISEK (USA) by technical fall in the quarterfinals at Las Vegas to ensure a trip to his third Olympic Games. Madsen edged Kim, 1-0, at the Pytlasinski Cup in his last warm-up before Rio.

KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR), 27, won the world title in 2013 and the Asian Games gold medal the following year. After finishing 10th in Las Vegas, the London 2012 gold medalist qualified for Rio 2016 in Astana, but has finished second in Poland and Germany in his final tune-ups before the Games.

Dark Horses: Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) was a podium regular at world-level events from 2010 to 2014 but slumped after slipping to ninth place in Las Vegas and losing his opening bout to Peter BASCI (HUN) in the Ulaanbaatar Olympic qualifier in April. He regained form, however, with four wins in repechage for a ticket to Rio 2016.

Andrew BISEK (USA) is a two-time world bronze medalist and shocked Vlasov, 6-6, with a last-second takedown in the round of 16 at the 2014 world meet. Bisek lost to Madsen in Las Vegas, but defeated 2011 world champion Saeid Mourad ABDVALI (IRI) for the bronze medal.

Zurabi DATUNASHVILI (GEO), seventh at London 2012, and European under-23 champion Viktor NEMES (SRB) represent young talent at welterweight after trading victories at the European championships and the European Olympic qualifier.

HAPPY PAPPY: 34-year-old Selcuk CEBI (TUR) won his first world titles in 2009 and 2010, defeating Madsen and then Julfalakyan, but waited five years for his third world crown in Las Vegas at the non-Olympic weight category of 80kg. In his Rio quest at 75kg, Cebi qualified in Istanbul and celebrated on the mats with young son, Yusuf, before the cheering fans.

مدعیان اصلی:

رومن ولاسف، روس قهرمان جهان و  المپیک است. با این حال او از  المپیک لندن 2012 تا  المپیک ریو 2016 کمی از مسیر موفقیت خود منحرف شده است.

ولاسوف که در سال 2011   قهرمان جهان شده بود، در سال 2013 در فینال قهرمانی جهان به کیم هیون وو، مدال آور طلای  المپیک 2012 باخت. در مسابقات جهانی 2014 او در راند یک هشتم به اندی بیسک آمریکایی باخت و راه را برای آرسن جلفالاکیان باز کرد تا قهرمان جهان شود.

ولاسوف با پیروزی مقابل جلفالاکیان در لاس وگاس قهرمان شد. ولاسوف 25 ساله در شش مسابقه اش 40 امتیاز را کسب کرد و امتیازی از دست نداد.

مبارزه طلبان:

دوژان کارتیکوف 27 ساله از قزاقستان توانست در مسابقات جهانی 2015 کیم و جلفالاکیان را شکست دهد و در نهایت مدال برنز کسب کند. کارتیکوف در این مسابقات تنها در یک چهارم نهایی  با نتیجه‌ هفت بر صفر به ولاسوف باخت.

مارک مادسن از دانمارک در مسابقات  المپیک 2012 لندن مقام پنجم را کسب کرد. او در مسابقات لاس وگاس در یک چهارم نهایی با ضربه فنی به اندرو بیسک باخت. مادسن قبل از مسابقات ریو در جام پیتلاسینسکی یک بر صفر کیم را شکست داد.

کیم هیون وو ، کشتی‌گیر 27 ساله از کره در سال 2013 قهرمان جهان شد و در همان سال مدال طلای بازی‌های آسیایی را کسب کرد. او در مسابقات لاس وگاس دهم شد. کیم مدال طلای  المپیک 2012 لندن را دارد. او قبل از بازی‌های ریو در  مسابقات آلمان و لهستان دوم شد.

شگفتی سازان:

آرسن جلفا لاکیان از ارمنستان از سال‌های 2010 تا 2014 جایگاه خوبی در مسابقات جهانی داشت، اما در مسابقات لاس وگاس نهم شد. او البته با چهار برد برای رسیدن به سهمیه ریو توانایی خود را بازیافت .

اندرو بیسک دو بار مدال برنز جهان را کسب کرده است و در یک هشتم نهایی مسابقات جهانی 2014 توانست ولاسوف را با نتیجه‌ شش بر شش شکست دهد. بیسک در مسابقات لاس وگاس از مادسن شکست خورد، اما او توانست سعید عبدولی قهرمان سال 2011 جهان را شکست دهد و مدال برنز کسب کند.

زورابی داتوناشویلی از گرجستان که مقام هفتم  المپیک لندن را دارد و ویکتور نمس از صربستان قهرمان مسابقات اروپایی زیر 23 سال استعدادهای جوان این وزن هستند. آنها در مسابقات قهرمانی اروپا و انتخاب  المپیک اروپا پیروزی‌هایی‌ داشتند.

پدر خوشحال:

سلجوق جبی 34 ساله ترک در سال 2009 و 2010 قهرمان جهان شد و توانست مادسن و جلفالاکیان را شکست دهد ، ولی او پنج سال برای رسیدن به سومین قهرمانی جهان خود در لاس وگاس صبر کرد. او در لاس وگاس در وزن 80 کیلوگرم که المپیکی نیست قهرمان شد، اما در  المپیک در وزن 75 کیلوگرم شرکت می‌کند.

جبی زمانی که سهمیه  المپیک گرفت پسرش را بر روی تشک آورد تا با هم خوشحالی کنند.
