Additional Cadet Competitors Allowed at Continental Championships

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (February 22) – Following the meeting of the United World Wrestling Executive Committee December 13 in in Sochi, it was decided that each national federation will be allowed to enter two athletes per weight category during the Cadet Continental Championships.

The executive committee believed that allowing only one wrestler per country per weight category was not successful in helping to increase youth participation, and saw additional competitors as a way to boost interest in wrestling at the international level.

In many countries where opportunities for cadets to compete internationally are rare, the one-wrestler rule was restricting the possibility for extensive participation of backup wrestlers at international competitions.

“We are hopeful that this decision will help our federations to promote wrestling in their respective countries,” said United World Wrestling president Nenad LALOVIC. “We want to let our young wrestlers know that maybe, one day, they will be able to participate in the major international competitions in the older age categories.”

The changes will go into effect immediately.
