Death of Abolfazl Anvari, Iranian Flag Bearer in Olympics

Iranian flag bearer at 1968 Olympics, Abolfazl ANVARI has passed away at age 79. Anvari was the first Iranian world medal winner at heavy weight and won  bronze medals at the 1966 world championships at +97kg, and the 1969 world championships at +100kg.

Anvari placed sixth at 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and also won bronze medal in 1970 Asian Games.

United World Wrestling offers its sympathy to the Iranian wrestling community and to Anvari’s family and friends.

WATCH: 10 Greco-Roman finals from World Championships

BELGRADE, Serbia (September 27) -- The World Championships began with Greco-Roman at the Stark Arena in Belgrade. Host nation Serbia claimed four gold medals out of the 10 on offer. However, it finished third in the team rankings with Turkey, led by legend Riza KAYAALP (TUR), finishing first. Azerbaijan finished second, just seven points behind Turkey.

Apart from Serbia, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan won two gold medals each while two others were shared by Azerbaijan and Armenia.
