Record Breaking Euro Title Wins for Stadnik, Maee

WARSAW, Poland (April 22) --- Mariya STADNIK (AZE) has been unbeaten in Europe for the last 11 years. Ever since the 32-year-old began competing at the senior level back in 2009, Stadnik has yet to drop a bout.

She extended her unbeaten record to one more year as she captured her ninth senior-level continental title (Championships and Games) and 11th overall at the European Championships in Warsaw on Thursday.

Her performance in Warsaw could well be the trailer of what the three-time Olympic medalist can do at the Tokyo Olympics later this year as she continues her search for a long-awaited gold medal at the Games.

In a disappointing finish, Russia could manage only one gold medal despite having four wrestlers in five finals on day two of women's wrestling.

Bilyana DUDOVA (BUL) at 59kg, who won her fourth European title at the senior level, Koumba LARROQUE (FRA) at 68kg and Epp MAEE (EST) at 76kg snatched the gold medals from Russia's hands at the spectator-less Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa COS Torwar stadium.

After skipping the 2019 and 2020 editions of the continental championships and being off the mat for 581 days, Stadnik stormed to the 50kg final on Wednesday in dominating fashion, beating Oksana LIVACH (UKR) 10-4. A day later, the two-time world champion put on a show of defense and experience to beat Miglena SELISHKA (BUL) 7-2.

The Bulgarian caught Stadnik by surprise at the beginning with a huge lock-and-lift to get two points. But Stadnik bounced back with a single leg to level the score. She scored a takedown and a stepout to lead 5-2 after the first period. She got another single-leg takedown in the second period to make it 7-2.

No attack from Selishka was strong enough to stop the Azerbaijani from winning a record 11th title and celebrating with childlike enthusiasm with the national flag.

In the bronze medal bout, two world bronze medalists clashed as Ekaterina POLESHCHUK (RUS) and Oksana LIVACH (UKR) put on a show. In a back-and-forth bout that went down to the wire, Poleshchuk edged Livach 10-9 to claim the bronze medal.

The bout began on a slow note as it was a 1-0 lead for Livach but 18 points were scored in the second period with Poleshchuk winning the battle of takedowns.

The second bronze medal went to Anna LUKASIAK (POL) as she defeated Emilia BUDEANU (MDA) 10-0. It was a special moment for her as she had failed to reach the European podium in her previous seven attempts. The 33-year-old finally captured her long-away continental medal and she did so in her home country.

In a record-breaking performance, Maee became Estonia's first-ever senior-level gold medalist in women's wrestling and ended an 82-year wait for her country to have a senior champion in all styles.

Johannes Kotkas was Estonia's last Euro champion back in 1939 when he won the gold medal at 87kg Greco-Roman weight category at the Oslo Championships.

Maee spoiled the party for Natalia VOROBEVA (RUS) as she hung on for a 1-1 victory in the 76kg final over the two-time Olympic medalist. With the win, the ever-tough heavyweight category got one more gold medal contender for the Tokyo Games.

Maee gave up a point for passivity in the first period but she got one for the Russian inactivity in the second period. With 1:18 left, Maee played the clock and claimed her first-ever gold medal at the senior European Championships since she first competed in 2011.

Young star Larroque showed that she is ready for the Tokyo Games as she claimed her first European title at 68kg in the fourth attempt. After qualifying for the Games in Budapest last month, the French wrestler pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win over Khanum VELIEVA (RUS).

The two should have met in the Olympic Qualifying tournament final but Velieva injury defaulted. The highly anticipated bout between the two young stars began with Larroque taking a 3-0 lead in the first period, all points scored via stepouts and passivity.

Velieva, who also qualified Russia for Tokyo from Budapest, scored two stepouts of her own to make it 3-2 but could not get at least one more point to win the gold medal.

Veronika CHUMIKOVA (RUS) was the third Russian wrestler to finish with a silver as Dudova managed to win her fourth European title with ease. It was her focus to win the fourth title that helped her claim a 5-1 win at 59kg.

"The Russian was a very tough wrestler but I told myself to concentrate hard and not lose focus in the final," Dudova said. "It's great to win the fourth title for my country and I have shown who I am.

"I was telling myself that I will be a European champion again. I did it today."

The only Russian wrestler to win the gold on Thursday was Stalvira ORSHUSH (RUS) as she claimed the 55kg title against Roksana ZASINA (POL) after a tight 2-2 win in the final.

The bronze medals at 55kg went to Khrystyna DEMKO (UKR) who defeated nJessica BLASZKA (NED) 9 - 4 while Andreea ANA (ROU) won the second bronze by beating Katsiaryna PICHKOUSKAYA (BLR) 12-0

Defending champion at 59kg Anastasia NICHITA (MDA) came back after her semifinal loss on Thursday to defeat Elif YANIK (TUR) via fall and claim the bronze medal. The second bronze went to Kateryna ZHYDACHEVSKA (ROU) who just managed to pull off against Yuliya PISARENKA (BLR) 3-3.

Alina MAKHYNIA (UKR) got a fall over Nesrin BAS (TUR) while Individual World Cup silver medalist Adela HANZLICKOVA (CZE) completed a victory by technical superiority over Ilana KRATYSH (ISR) to claim the bronze medals at 68kg.

In a fierce battle of 76kg rivals, Aline ROTTER FOCKEN (GER) beat Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR) 4-0 to win the bronze medal while Cynthia Vanessa VESCAN (FRA) completed a 13-0 win over Sabira ALIYEVA (AZE) to win the second bronze at the weight category.

Ukraine's field day

If Russia had a field day on Wednesday, it was the turn of Ukraine on Thursday as the European nation sent three of their wrestlers in the final out of the five remaining weight categories of women's wrestling.

Iryna KOLIADENKO (UKR), Tetiana RIZHKO (UKR) and Alla BELINSKA (UKR) made it to the finals of the 62kg, 65kg and 72kg weight categories.

At 53kg, Rio Olympian Maria PREVOLARAKI (GRE) set up a final against Euro champ at 55kg Olga KHOROSHAVTSEVA (RUS). The two had dominating semifinal wins as both won by a nine-point difference.

Prevolaraki stopped Mariia VYNNYK (UKR) from advancing to the final while Khoroshavtseva almost had a technical superiority win over Iulia LEORDA (MDA) but finished one point short to win 9-0.

While Vynnyk lost a one-sided bout, her compatriot Alina HRUSHYNA AKOBIIA (UKR) had almost made it to the final but was stunned by Anhelina LYSAL (POL).

A month after qualifying Ukraine for the Olympics at 57kg, Akobiia was looking good for another finals appearance but Lysak, who was trailing 1-8, got Akobiia in a front headlock and exposed her for two points. She continued the hold and got the pin to reach the final, ending Akobiia's dream of a first European gold medal at senior level after she finished second last year.

Lysak will now face Iryna KURACHKINA (BLR) who will look to build on her gold medal-winning performance at the Individual World Cup in December last year in Belgrade, Serbia.

As other wrestlers had a tough day on the mat, Kurachkina absolutely dominated her three bouts, winning all of them via technical superiority.

At 62kg, ever since her silver medal-winning performance in the Rio Olympics, Valeria KOBLOVA (RUS) has found it difficult to regain her form and Thursday was no exception.

The multiple-time Europe champion fell 5-2 to Iryna KOLIADENKO (UKR), who was one of the four Ukraine wrestler who qualified her country for the Tokyo Games.

Before her semifinal, Koliadenko had won her two bouts with ease and in similar fashion had little to no trouble against Koblova. She will now wrestle multiple-time European medalist Marina SASTIN (HUN).

The veteran from Hungary did not step on the mat on Thursday and reached the final at 62kg as both her opponents forfeited. She will be looking to win her first European gold medal on Friday.

In what will be a rematch of the 65kg final at the Individual World Cup from last year, Irina RINGACI (MDA) will face Tetiana RIZHKO (UKR) on Friday and will try to avenge her loss from Serbia.

Rizhko had dominated Ringaci in the final in Belgrade by winning the gold medal 14-4. But both looked a notch above everyone else in Warsaw, winning their semifinals by technical superiority.

In the final weight category of women's wrestling that was in action on Thursday, Alla BELINSKA (UKR) set up a final against Yuliana YANEVA (BUL).

With the win in the semifinal against Evgeniia ZAKHARCHENKO (RUS), Belinska confirmed herself a first senior-level European medal. She will like to win the gold but standing in her way is Bulgari's young talent and World Cup winner at 72kg Yaneva, who won 3-1 in the semifinal against Dalma CANEVA (ITA).

Apart from the women's wrestling finals, Greco-Roman action will begin on Friday in Warsaw with five weight categories -- 55kg, 63kg, 77kg, 87kg, and 130kg -- in action.

Bullen bullies her way to 65kg gold; Ukraine wins team title

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (April 11) -- Grace BULLEN (NOR) had three European title before Friday, all in different weight classes.

She added a fourth European title, in a new weight class by defeating world and two-time European champion Irina RINGACI (MDA) 11-8 in the 65kg final, the heaviest she has competed in. Bullen won her first European title in 2017, winning gold at 58kg. In 2021, she won at 57kg, last year at 62kg and now at 65kg.

"I feel I've come to like jumping over challenges that I think are difficult but I am fully capable of [overcoming]," Bullen said of switching weight classes for Europeans. "Just getting that out there and proving to myself because I feel that every match, I have to prove something to myself. I did that today, even though it was hard coming here."

In what turned out to be the match of tournament in Women's Wrestling, Bullen and Rigaci went toe-to-toe in the 65kg final. Bullen got on board first with a suplex from standing for four but Ringaci immediately answered with a double-leg takedown and gut wrench to make it 4-4 with Bullen leading on criteria for her bigger move. A stepout gave Bullen a 5-4 lead before she defended a leg-attack from Ringaci to maintain the lead at the break.

"I've seen her throws," she said. "I see how she's able to come out of every position like a wizard. She's a hard opponent to have because she knows how to get out of difficult positions. I have more touch and go and she's likes to scramble, and I'm trying to stay out of it and give her as less as points to her."

Ringaci opened the second period with a takedown on the edge for two points and take the lead 6-5. As Ringaci tried her underhooks, Bullen would block with double-leg attacks. Ringaci would try the whizzer only to give taken down by Bullen. In one such attack, Bullen scored a takedown to reclaim the lead before a sequence gave two points each to both wrestler with Bullen lead 9-8.

Bullen went for the armbar and kept Ringaci in danger for the final minute and won her fourth European title.

"I'm trying not to [think about the points given]," she said. "I came into the match with some task and it's to wrestle with my style and I'm trying to do it as best as possible, keeping the distance and keeping my attacks as strong and fast. I know that I went up a weight class mainly because I wanted to meet new opponents. It's a new opponents and I get to challenge my wrestling into it and that's why I bumped up a weight class."

The Paris bronze medalist at 62kg said that after the performance in Paris, where she became the first Norway wrestler to win an Olympic medal in 94 years, it was difficult to restart with an aim of reaching the top level again.

"When you've done a great performance and you have to do it all over again," she said. "But it's like it's a new task. She's not an easy opponent to stand in front of as she's challenging and has a lot of experience on the mat. I have huge respect for all my opponents. I want to do great, even though I know it's difficult. So I'm proud of myself that I was able to do that today"

Bullen, who burst on the scene a decade ago with her big moves, won the U17 world and European titles, gold at the Youth Olympic Games in 2014, the world U23 title. As she grew as a wrestler, hopes with Bullen also grew. However, after failing to qualify for the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, Bullen needed a new lease of life for her wrestling.

Shifting base to Georgia and switching her training accordingly did wonders. She moved up to 62kg, won bronze medal at the World Championships and the Paris Olympic Games. That inspired many as a wrestler with South Sudanese heritage stood on the podium at the Olympics in Women's Wrestling.

Despite all the changes, Bullen wants to keep her style.

"I also don't want to lose Grace Bullen as a wrestler," she said. "Many people know me as a person that does a great lift. I want to be remembered as someone who finds a way that I can win matches and still take with me the great aspect of the wrestler that I always have been. I want to be remembered as someone making some great moments and big moves because I like the wow people get through out of it."

Ukraine wins team title

Ukraine won two more gold medals on Friday, adding to the two won day before and claimed the team title with 180 points. It was in a battle with Turkiye but the latter ended up with 158 points to be at the second place. Romania finished third with 79 points.

Rising start Iryna BONDAR (UKR) claimed the 62kg gold medal on her senior European Championships debut to add another medal to her resume. She capped her dominant run outscoring her opponents 31-5 including a fall in the final.

"This medal is the best one in my career so far," Bondar said. "It’s the senior level. Out of all the medals I’ve ever won, this is the best — the senior European Championships."

Wrestling Johanna LINDBORG (SWE) in the final, Bondar got on board with a point for Lindborg's inactivity before she swung the Swede using underhook and pinned her on the mat. Lindborg had 30-seconds to survive the pin attempt as the first period would have ended but Bondar controlled her and secured the fall with seven seconds remaining in the first period.

The gold medal is another one for the 21-year-old Bondar who has already won all the age-group continental golds.

"I’ve been working toward this," she said. "I progressed step by step — first in the U20 category. Last year was my final year there, then I moved on to U23. And now, for the first time, I’m competing at the senior level. This is a whole different level of wrestling — senior wrestling is tough and intense.

Among her four wins in Bratislava, Bondar defeated former world champion Bilyana DUDOVA (BUL) 8-1 in the quarterfinals and handed Alina KASABIEVA (UWW) an 8-4 drubbing in the semifinals.

"[At the senior level], your opponents don’t forgive mistakes — if you do something wrong, even by accident, they immediately punish you," she said. "I’m really happy that I was able to defeat such strong opponents, some of whom have already competed at the Olympics. I’m very happy that I managed to win in my weight class."

Bondar, who is in the same weight class as Paris 62kg silver medalist Iryna KOLIADENKO (UKR), said that she feels best at 62kg. Koliadenko wrestled at 65kg in Bratislava and won a bronze medal. Bondar, with her gold medal, confirmed her spot on the Ukrainian team for the World Championships, like all other gold or silver medalists from the country.

"I’m not planning to compete in 65kg," Bondar said. "I don’t feel like myself there. This year, I’ve already secured my spot and will go to the World Championship in the 62kg category."

The World Championships will be another big test for Bondar who is hoping to get the better of her Asian rivals who wrestle with more speed and attacks than the European wrestlers.

"Are there tougher opponents? Yes, absolutely. The toughest competitors are from Japan — they are the strongest in the world. You gain technique and experience. You wrestle with opponents you haven’t faced before, more experienced ones. You grow by competing against such athletes. I’m gradually building up speed now, over the summer, and we’ll be preparing for the World Championship."

Ukraine's second gold medal came at 72kg after Alla BELINSKA (UKR) defeated retuning champion Nesrin BAS (TUR) in the final, also via fall.

Bas was called for passivity in the first period and Belinska came out with a perfect headlock throw in the second period to put Bas on the mat and held her for the fall.

Ukraine's wins in the head-to-head bouts against Turkiye helped it claim the team title.

At 57kg, two-time European champion Olga KHOROSHAVTSEVA (UWW) added a third as she defeated Elvira KAMALOGLU (TUR), 6-4, in the final.

Khoroshavtseva used an outside trip which wasn't successful but she got Kamaloglu in a takedown for two points. Kamaloglu answered with a single-leg takedown and then a turn to lead 4-2.

A snap from Khoroshavtseva helped her get the criteria 4-4 lead and Kamaloglu played catch up for the final two minutes of the bout. Khoroshavtseva used a wrong-direction go-behind for another two points to win her the gold medal, her first since the gold she won in 2021.

"It’s been a long journey and a huge amount of hard work to achieve this kind of result," she said. "I don’t really feel anything at all. The realization will probably come later. For now, it just feels like emptiness — because you gave it your all, and there’s nothing left to feel."

About her final, Khoroshavtseva said that she did not prepare too much and just wanted to wrestle.

"The final match was kind of chaotic, to be honest," she said. "I was more focused on the first day, and by the time the final came, I wasn’t really mentally or physically prepared — I just went out there to wrestle and do whatever I could."

The fifth gold of the night went to Maria PREVOLARAKI (GRE) who won her first gold medal in her 14th try at the European Championships. She defeated Andreea ANA (ROU) 5-4 in the final.
