About Helen

In 2016, Maroulis made history becoming the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, and she did it in legendary fashion, defeating 13-time World champion and three-time Olympic champion Saori YOSHIDA (JPN) in the 53 kg Olympic finals. She followed up her historic performance with a perfect showing at the ’17 World Championships to win a gold medal without giving up a point. She is also a ’15 World champion as well as a ’12 Pan American Championships gold medalist and ’11 Pan American Games champion, among several other international golds. In ’18, Maroulis suffered severe damage from a concussion, which kept her off the podium at the World Championships, and eventually kept her from competing at the ’19 World Championships. She bounced back at the ’20 Pan American Olympic Qualifier, where she advanced to the finals to qualify the U.S. for Tokyo at 57 kg. This year, she won gold at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix and most recently took seventh at the Ranking Series event Poland Open.
